Bringing 90s Vibe To The Digital Era.

How was your New Year Eve celebration? Partying hard? Or, were you just like me, binge watching until I finally fell asleep. Whatever it is, just make sure that all the “New Year New Me” stuff is not just a one time euphoria. Make time to be grateful about everything (highs or lows) that God has allowed to happen to you in the past year, and write down every single thing that you want to see happen in the new year.

What’s more important is to actually keeping your hope alive, because you know sooner or later reality is gonna happen to you. Sometimes your plans will be delayed, postponed, or even canceled, but never stop believing that the journey of life is actually a constant road to better places.

Geesh what a long opening. I’m sorry. First post of 2018 will be about my current obsession over everything 90s. So I’m gonna compile some of my recent #OOTD photos and give you some useful tips plus what are the brands that I’ve been wearing (mostly locals). Gotta say thank you for my amazing photographers friends, Didi and Joel, who have been willing to help me in taking these ootd shots.

  1. Invest in accessory. By the way, prime colors is trending this year. Thus, the orange cap and yellow jacket.
  2. Oversized and tucked-in t-shirt is back. Balance your tee collection between the plain one and the printed one.
  3. Find something that can be your signature style. As for me, socks, apart from rounded-glasses, have been quite of my signature. I have plenty of them from any colors and patterns.
  4. Invest in basic outerwear like denim jacket and hooded pullover. Mine has a pair exaggerated sleeves that is really a head-turner. Oh, don’t forget to also invest in other basic stuff like a pair of black skinny jeans and white canvas shoes.
  5. Track pants are back. Enuff said.

A Sleepyhead’s Attempt to Write About A Weekend Adventure

An adventure is only an adventure if you don’t know where it leads you. Don’t you agree?

As a spontaneous person, I love making adjustments and changes in the middle of my adventure, of course it depends on the circumstances that I’m facing.¬† As a matter of fact, I did that a lot in our adventures and explorations in the city. To be specific, one of those adventures happened on a particular Saturday morning, during¬†a long weekend in April where we decided to do a little sunrise photo hunt.

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

Snapchat-ing on an empty bridge.

As you read in the few¬†first paragraphs above, you probably wonder, “What are these 2 doing waking up very early on a freaking holiday?” Well, we thought of that as well. A few regrets passed my mind when I grumpily made my way to the shower that morning. What can I say? It was the love of exploration that kept me up and dressed at 5 AM on a national holiday.

The spot we intended to visit was a very long bridge that connects Citiwalk to Kasablanka. For such a long time, I’ve been passing this bridge every week on my way to church. It was only a few weeks ago when I started noticing that it is always empty in the morning. Plus, the view at 6AM when the sun started to¬†appear on the east had always been captivating. This gave me an exploration idea that I soon proposed to HG, who is always keen for more photo opps.

All blacks with a pair of white kicks.

So there we stood, on an empty bridge at 6 AM in the morning, wearing all blacks. I was wearing a black hoodie from Forever 21 (simply because it was cold), a snapback from Topman (because I didn’t have the chance to cut my hair for months), a black t-shirt from Uniqlo (because, I didn’t want to be shirtless), a black skinny jeans from Pull & Bear and my all time favorite white converse.

HG, who was also in all black attire, was wearing a snapback, a long tee and a skinny jeans, all from H&M. He added a touch of blue by wearing his favorite blue scarf from Kana Goods along with a pair of white Nike hi top kicks. Here’s a few more photos of our morning faces that weren’t actually ready for any photos. Honestly, I really tried, but I’m just not a morning person.

Feeling unsatisfied with only one spot, we decided to visit a cemetery we’ve been dying to go to. Just to make it clear, we don’t mean that literally. I still have long years ahead of me, and I pray to God I will make it till I’m 100. Okay, this is the caffeine speaking.

So this cemetery isn’t just another cemetery. It is a war memorial cemetery for the dutch soldiers and high ranking officers who served in Indonesia during the war. The sad part is, it is one of the most well managed cemetery I’ve ever visited in my own country. Come on Indonesia, you can do better in honoring our own deceased soldiers! Maybe, I should run for the presidential candidate in 10 years and fix this? Okay, this is clearly the caffeine speaking.

So as you can see above, this cemetery has its own church. If my observation was correct, it has a mosque as well. We were probably trespassing in some of those photos, but if you know us, you would know that we didn’t really care. I was more scared of falling down from that high ladder compared to getting caught by the security. Allow me to call them “the guardian of the tomb.”Sounds quite awesome, ain’t it right?

Another photo spot we had fun on, was of course the gravestones area. It was very well maintained, it didn’t feel like Jakarta. It felt like I was somewhere in Rome since everything was very catholic in visual. Because of that, we decided to explore a bit more and take some more photos.

I tried looking gangsta, but I looked like weeping mother Mary, no disrespect. HG tried the praying pose, although I personally thought he was falling asleep in this photo. He’s a light sleeper.

Too bad the mall was opened at 10AM. We took some time to explore the parking area and took¬†more photos to kill time. If you ever find me in a tired, sleepy and hungry condition, please feed me. Or else, I would look grumpy like one of these photos below. On worse condition, I would start laughing. That’s your cue to stay away and call for professional help, like a vet or something.

Have a great week ahead! Keep exploring!

Sunday Talk at Darling Rice Club

Being both a professional writer¬†and at the same time a part-time blogger sometimes means having yourself drowned in a swamp of deadlines. The only way out of that tons of articles and blog posts is *drumroll* sitting and dealing with that blank page in front of you. Not really a rocket science, huh? And every writer say, “Amen.”

Now, a good place (read: a quiet and empty space with great wifi connection) matters a lot when it comes to composing your drafts. Darling Rice Club, has been one of the very few places that we visit when we need to sit and write, or when we need a nothing box, or when we simply need to brainstorm together.

The place is strategically located, offers good coffee and other beverages like juice and smoothies. They also serve delicious Indonesian foods with affordable price. Conclusion, it has everything we need.

Last Sunday, the crowd was not only your two writing machines. We were accompanied by some of our close friends. Over some cups of coffee, a few plates of Indonesian cuisines and snacks we got involved in a convo about The Perks of Being 20. Nope, not our website here, but the literal meaning of living a twenty something life.

If you’re wondering of the absence of any photos in this post, it was intentional. Well, this post is a little bit different.

The moment suddenly came where we asked about our good friends’ opinions of the blog. “Inspiring” was the word they chose to use, especially every time we explore the city. Through our blog, they got a glimpse of the 20 something season as the season of freedom, the season where you enter adulthood and leave¬†adolescence behind. It’s that time where you will be introduced to many responsibilities, yet at the same time more flexibility. For those friends who already left the 20s, they said there are times when¬†they regret not following their guts when they were younger.

As for us, as we got deeper into the convo we just realized the real perks of being 20. It’s the year of freedom to explore, try new things, go on an adventure, figure things out and pursue what you really like to do. It’s the season to try things out!

Speaking of which, DR & I, have been triggered to dig deeper into our passionate pursuit of the creative and branding industry. Through the making of this blog, we have learned a lot about ourselves. We realized how crazy we are about the creative industry and how discontent we would be upon looking at some major branding mistakes. Over some nights of talking and brainstorming, a new project was born.

It’s too early to tell you now, but we promise to update you soon.

Well, after that quite serious Sunday talk and after we finished our writings, surely ootd photo session was next. Both of us were wearing denim items paired with grey and black colors.

From Promenade to Papilion

The world unites in a joyful manner¬†every time Friday comes knocking. How many of you are guilty of secretly desiring Friday to come faster when it’s actually still Tuesday? Well, I’m one of them.¬†You could actually consider me as one of the loyal TGIF-and-Friyay-hashtag users, who consistently feel a sense of enthusiasm just by putting that hashtag on their¬†photo.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I don’t love my job, it’s not that I don’t enjoy weekdays. As a matter of fact, I actually do and I’m all psyched up every time Monday comes because for me, I couldn’t enjoy weekend if I don’t have a productive weekdays (read: I can’t afford my weekend if I don’t work on weekdays).¬†Nope, I’m not being unreal. If you have found the job that you love, you’d be grateful for Monday because you get to do what you like and get paid while many other people are still busy finding the one thing that they like.

Anyways, as Friday came last week, I¬†embraced it with arms wide open. As always. But, there was a little thought that bothered me. “What should I wear¬†tomorrow?” DR & I planned to visit three new places (we’ll write to you soon in the upcoming weeks) and when we are on the roll, a fun ootd photo taking is definitely expected.

Tip toeing.

Keeping balance.

I felt a little bit lazy to try on some new looks. So I decided to just go with a nautical stripes tee from Uniqlo – with my initials patched onto its pocket, a pair of grey skinnies from H&M, and monochrome slip-ons from Marnova. I also felt a little bit uninspired to even give my hair the proper amount of wax I ended up wearing a black snapback from H&M. I worried a little that I might be under-dressed compared to DR.

But, apparently great minds do think alike. I was relieved when I finally met DR and found out that he was also in the mood of looking uber casual. He wore a red long tee from H&M, snapback (told ya, we do think alike), DIY ripped jeans, and a pair of white classic hi-top Converse.

Conclusion is, even when we were too lazy to dress up, we ended up still just fine and acceptable for some OOTD photos. Nailed it.

Follow the sign.

After having a yummy lunch in East Jakarta we headed South for some coffee o’clock. Our destination was the Promenade 20 (The Perks of Being 20 at Promenade 20, too much coincidence?). We intended to visit this newly opened second outlet of Watt Coffee. As we hopped out of our car, we found ourselves in an empty and huge parking space.

DR was like, “Okay, let’s take some photos first.” And I replied, “Yeap, the coffee definitely can wait.”

After a little while, the basement got us sweating heavily. In Jakarta, as light as you can dress, you won’t stand being in a closed room without any AC. We got out and chilled at Watt Coffee. Of course more photos happened there, but that’s for another post.

Our next¬†itinerary that weekend was dinner at Soulfood, still in Kemang. But before we left, we decided to explore the semi-outdoor area of Promenade 20. It’s a commercial and office park designed in greyish victorian style.¬†I don’t know why, but the architectural look, especially its high-ceiling, reminded me a bit of QVB in Sydney.

Promenade 20. Jl. Bangka No.20, Pela Mampang, Mampang Prpt., Jakarta Selatan.

Promenade was fun. But, we gotta move.

On our way to Soulfood, we realized that we were out of cash. So we had to drop by at the nearest ATM in the area. We found one at The Papilion, Jalan Kemang Raya No. 45AA.

It was not my first visit to Papilion, but it was definitely the first time I realized how pretty The Papilion building is. The iconic glass structure, which was designed by a local architect, Gregorious Yolodi, screams fashionably urban to anyone who sees it. Fashionable trendsetters and creative thinkers will be definitely magnetized by its strong yet poise appearance.

Again, DR, as if he could read my mind, said, “Let’s explore this building, and take some good photos.”¬†I replied with a quick nod.

So we climbed our way up. From the basement to the top. The Papilion was filled with eclectic art galleries, specialty shops, Huiz Van Wely restaurant, and the famous bar, SHY Rooftop. If you’re really a 20 something, you must have at least came to¬†this bar, at least for once.

Branding 101.

photo1458526687849

A little pause on our way to the top.

We found this empty white space at the third floor, and it was closed. If you’ve been reading our previous posts (Denim Day Out and Exploring The Urban Jungle), an empty space means the right spot for ootd photos, even if it’s closed.

One minute we were on the outside, next minute we were already posing inside. I got nervous every time I heard footsteps coming, but DR simply wouldn’t stop. Well, that’s another perks of being 20 that we can share to you. Be spontaneous and be adventurous. It’s the season for you to explore many things, even if it’s as simple as finding a good ootd spot.

Long story short, we waved sayonara to Papilion, and quickly went to Soulfood (wait for our post about it) as our tummy were starting to make some hungry noises. Weekend will always be fun if you spend it with your favorite people, doing new things that might not be repeatable, making memories for your future.

As I’m writing this, I already got all thrilled for our next weekend plan. Stay tune to our Instagram feeds (@ThePerksofBeing20) to stay updated, or simply follow our Snapchat (gersonhenry and demasryan) to find out what we’re up to this weekend.

A New Hurrcut, A Rainy Sunday, and A Good Coffee Talk

Sunday has always been the most awaited day for me. It’s my easiest escape from a Monday to Friday work madness. I get to meet my favorite troops, I get to try new places, I get to do cafe-hopping, and ¬†I get to have a hurrcut.

Being quite an itinerary freak that I am, I always, well not always but most of the time, know what I want to do every Sunday. And so my plan for last Sunday was to get a hurrcut, and go to FJ Bistro & Deli to have a nice coffee time. Plus, of course, taking photos in between.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

New hurrcut finally!

Thanks to the rainy season, I get to finally wear some layers. Jacket: Pull & Bear; White Sweater: H&M; Grey Pants: Forever21; White Kicks: BNV

I’ve been a loyal customer of¬†Rep D’Salon, at Jl. Senopati No. 74, since 4 years ago I guess. They are the¬†behind-the-scene of¬†my hair transformation, from the british undercut style, to manbun, to pompadour, to sleek pomaded style, to my current obssesion over Eric Rutherford‘s hairstyle. A semi-wavy pompadour hair with half-faded side.

Anyways, after that I headed directly to FJ Bistro & Deli, Kemang, to join my friends. FJ Bistro & Deli is part of the FJ Group who also owns the Fj’L Boutique, FJ On 7, FJ Rotisserie, and FJ Grill.

We ordered some cup of hot lattes, ginger ales, cakes, and nachos.

The bistro offers a variety¬†of top notch “price-don’t-lie” Italian and western cuisines alongside a selection of desserts that would make¬†your sweet tooth goes gaga. The place is quite spacey and is divided into three area, the bar area, the non-smoking area decorated with white tables and sofas, and also the alfresco area, which was closed because it was raining. A transparent wall divides¬†the exterior and interior part, which gives the bistro quite a spacey¬†look.

Livin A Commuter Life in A Better Jakarta

So last week, I forgot what day it was, DR texted me and asked, “Have you followed Ta-Ku’s snapchat?” And I was like, “What? He has a Snapchat?” I immediately sought out his Snapchat account, and clicked follow.

I’ve been a fan of Ta-Ku‘s Instagram feeds. He’s been consistently displaying a series of three very artsy photos every day. So when I knew, that he has a Snapchat, I couldn’t help but wondering, whether it’s gonna be as artsy as his IG, or he’s gonna show the real side of him. The un-artsy side of him.

Apparently, his snaps are just as¬†artsy as¬†his IG feeds, everything is in motion, black and white, beautified with mellifluous and melancholic tunes. I would describe it as cinematically soothing. You seriously gotta follow him on Snapchat. We don’t take an “I don’t have a Snapchat” excuse.

DR & I were hooked, or to be exact, obsessed. If you follow us on Snapchat (it’s @demasryan and @gersonhenry) you would pretty much see us literally “stealing” Ta-Ku’s snaps. Ta-Ku mostly¬†captures the commuting life of Japan’s local citizen, taken from inside a train or from a train station, mixed with plenty of street views and urban cityscapes.

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

And so that’s the whole intro of this post, which is gonna be about our random exploring day we had on last Sunday. Inspired by Ta-Ku, or shall I say obsessed,¬†DR threw in the idea for us to try the KA Commuter Jabodetabek (the name of Jakarta’s commuter line system, which was known as the KRL – Kereta Api Listrik or Electric Train in English)¬†and just go photo hunt.

I was instantly sold to that idea.

It’s interesting that I didn’t really know what to expect, but I did expect that this trip won’t be as enjoyable as my commuting experience that I had in Singapore or Sydney. Both of us were born and grew up in Jakarta, but we never really wanted to try this particular public transportation because, perhaps, like most of Jakarta’s citizen, we were just too snobbish to try it.

Just be honest, most of us, no matter how frustrated we are with the traffic, we would always choose our own comfortable car or Uber or taxi than the commuter line. Well, it’s not wholly our fault. We grew up being educated and exposed to the concept that Jakarta’s public transportation is just unsafe, dirty, uncomfortable, not being well taken care of, and so on. And that’s why for most of upper-middle class, Trans Jakarta or busway, and commuter line are just not their first transportation choice.

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

We started our trip from Sudirman Station and we planned to just take the emptiest train (whatever destination it is), so we can do our photo hunt freely. As I entered the station, I was amazed, that it’s actually not bad at all. There’s even a Starbucks outlet inside! (that’s like the benchmark whether a public place is visitable or not LOL, if Starbucks wants to open its outlet there,¬†then it’s definitely a go).

They stopped using the paper ticketing system in 2013, and has been using the electronic ticketing system, which is far more efficient. You only need to buy the e-card, top up your balance (you need to have at least IDR 11,000 in your balance), tap it as you go inside the platform. All the signs are also properly designed and will be very helpful for you to see which route or line that you need to take.

Since 2011, the commuter line has 6 integrated color coded routes which serve the Greater Jakarta. You can check the routes and more info about the commuter line system here.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

The trains are air-conditioned, well-maintained, composed by used Japanese trains from Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Japan Railway and Tokyu, with some local-produced trains from Industri Kereta Api (INKA). The first and last locomotives are for women only, so if you’re a woman there’s at least enough safety guaranteed for you.

It was quite a new and pleasant experience for both of us. We were just busy hopping in and out from one station to the others, taking our time to capture some instagenic photos. And yes, we got what we were looking for.

I am now fully impressed and have high hopes for¬†the transportation system in Jakarta. I could see that the current government are really making their best effort in building this city into a better place. And I am now even more excited to welcome the MRT and LRT system. If you are in your 20s now don’t under estimate the ongoing progress that is happening now, because the future of this city, this nation, might be in your hands. You could be one of the answers, one of the solutions that this country needs. Holla!

(Not So) Average Wednesday

So today was started out as just another day. I planned to go home right away after office. I didn’t plan to meet DR and our other friends, spend the night with them – killing time while waiting for Jakarta’s traffic to finally end – and I didn’t even plan to get any ootd photo stock.

I woke up to Jakarta’s gloomy sky. So I just decided to go with a navy sweater, and of course my new neck scarf to add some statement. As for the bottoms part, I just went with my regular skinny jeans – all rolled up, and a pair of my black BNV.

What started out as (what I thought was) a regular weekday turned out to be quite a weekend-comes-too-soon experience. I guess my friends and I just couldn’t really move on from our holidays.

Me, DR and the rest of the troops met up after office. Had a spontaneous ootd session, thank God I always left home all fashionably prepared, and then had a pleasant dinner at Bariuma Ramen, Citywalk. It was my first time at Bariuma and surely won’t be my last. I might come back some time to share it with you what’s good and what’s not about it. Emphasize on “might”, though, haha.
