Bringing 90s Vibe To The Digital Era.

How was your New Year Eve celebration? Partying hard? Or, were you just like me, binge watching until I finally fell asleep. Whatever it is, just make sure that all the “New Year New Me” stuff is not just a one time euphoria. Make time to be grateful about everything (highs or lows) that God has allowed to happen to you in the past year, and write down every single thing that you want to see happen in the new year.

What’s more important is to actually keeping your hope alive, because you know sooner or later reality is gonna happen to you. Sometimes your plans will be delayed, postponed, or even canceled, but never stop believing that the journey of life is actually a constant road to better places.

Geesh what a long opening. I’m sorry. First post of 2018 will be about my current obsession over everything 90s. So I’m gonna compile some of my recent #OOTD photos and give you some useful tips plus what are the brands that I’ve been wearing (mostly locals). Gotta say thank you for my amazing photographers friends, Didi and Joel, who have been willing to help me in taking these ootd shots.

  1. Invest in accessory. By the way, prime colors is trending this year. Thus, the orange cap and yellow jacket.
  2. Oversized and tucked-in t-shirt is back. Balance your tee collection between the plain one and the printed one.
  3. Find something that can be your signature style. As for me, socks, apart from rounded-glasses, have been quite of my signature. I have plenty of them from any colors and patterns.
  4. Invest in basic outerwear like denim jacket and hooded pullover. Mine has a pair exaggerated sleeves that is really a head-turner. Oh, don’t forget to also invest in other basic stuff like a pair of black skinny jeans and white canvas shoes.
  5. Track pants are back. Enuff said.

Something About the President’s Bomber Jacket!

Isn’t it funny how sometimes we, Indonesians, could make things viral through memes and social media?

Last weekend,¬†Jakarta was at the edge of having another riot, which successfully made most of us feeling unsafe and worried. Most¬†businesses¬†decided to close their offices and let their employees home for safety reasons. Well, I wasn’t complaining as I finally had the much-needed rest I’ve been longing for since last month.

So I spent my day off celebrating this real TGIF moment by sleeping in, having TV series marathon, editing photos for this particular post, and going to Gelora Bung Karno for my weekly 5K run. Hashtag humble brag. Each of my timeline in several social media platforms were filled with updated news about this massive protest. Some people shared their thoughts, some people shared photos, and MOST people shared funny memes. I decided not to throw any comments, whether the serious ones or the funny ones, at all. At that moment, I honestly thought that a prayer was what this country needed the most. Although, I had to admit scrolling through all the memes were very much entertaining.

Anyways, as the clock was about to hit 5.30 PM, I ordered Uber Motor to take me to Gelora Bung Karno, assuming that the demonstration had already finished and it was finally save to go out. Well, my assumption was kinda right, because the streets were pretty much empty. It was a very rare view on a Friday afternoon indeed!

Fast forward to 7 PM when I was finally back home and had shower. After a refreshing cold shower, I turned the TV on only to find out what started as a peaceful protest¬†had just turned into a riot¬†as late as bedtime story! I couldn’t be more grateful that I was already home because it looked very chaotic out there.

So I turned my tv off and decided to simply start working on this post. But, writer’s block happened.

The riot continued until almost midnight. Everyone was worried. I kept on getting text messages from friends overseas asking about my condition as I live quite near to the riot area. Finally, about 12.05 AM (I know right), our president appeared on TV for a press conference, giving his speech regarding the current situation. I didn’t really pay attention to that as I was so distracted by the outerwear that he wore on TV.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one noticing, because the moment I opened my Path, most friends were already posting funny memes about it. People were making a lot of fuss over – not the speech, interestingly – our president’s bomber jacket! I kind of took pride to the fact that this president that I voted appeared casually fashionable in public.

Thanks to you Mr. Jokowi, I finally have a topic to write!

Last week DR & I bought the so-called must have item of the season. Yeap, and we were accidentally – as always – twinning in our new bombers, baseball caps and Nike kicks, as we attended the soft opening of Onokabe Suki & Grill. What’s even better, we stumbled upon this empty balcony at the 2nd floor of the newly opened restaurant that was perfect for a photo opp.

DR got his black bomber jacket from Pull & Bear, which he wore with a black t-shirt, denim shorts, a pair of Nike Internationalist, and completed with a burgundy-colored cap. As DR decided to go black with bomber, I chose to stay loyal to this navy blue bomber  from Bershka. I wore it with a plain black t-shirt from Uniqlo, a pair of skinny from H&M, a pair of Nike Airmax, and I completed the look with a pale pink (say what, aesthetic generation, haha) cap.

We loved the look as much as RI 1 did. Mr Jokowi, any chance for a OOTD collaboration with us?

This look would be suitable for you if you love to appear casual and simple. Sometimes I’d go with a plain white t-shirt underneath the jacket. But that would be another topic. Yeap, we have¬†another article about plain white tee that we’ll share with you in a few weeks!

Postcard from Australia: Fashion, Generations Apart

As interesting as Australia was, it wouldn’t be as much interesting without its people. I personally think the variant type of people in Australia is the reason behind such an lively country. Take a day out in Melbourne or Australia and you can spot different kinds of people with their own fashion expressions and freedom. Unlike Jakarta, we are so much condoned to the norms of looking good.

It doesn’t stop in fashion. Stroll around, take time to talk to new people and you will find their independent expressions through their speech and opinionated conversation, which are harder to find in Asian countries.

During my 2 and a half weeks of roaming through Melbourne and Sydney, I had the most fun exploration because of its people. As much as possible I will try to talk to them, get to know them better and explore their principles that created such strong standpoints in their day to day life. Believe it or not, I came back with stronger conviction and higher level of ignorance towards what people say about my life.

Who says traveling doesn’t teach you anything?

Anyways, here is a postcard, dedicated to the locals of Australia who are bold enough to stand for what they believe in, yet humble enough to accept differences.

Anyway, wish us the best of luck as we hike Rinjani tomorrow morning! We would really love to stay alive and write more blog posts for you.

A 2,200 Years Old Legacy for Men

This might be the most uncommon¬†title of a fashion-related post that I ever came up with. Some of you might raise your eyebrows, wondering what’s the manly 2,200 years old tradition. We’ll get there later.

Being quite a fashion geek that I am, I’m always keen to find out what’s the current trend and to try new things so that I don’t end up stuck pulling off the same look over and over again.

So I constantly check out GQ or Hypebeast to get some inspiration, and last week here is what I found: neck scarf for men.

Untitled-1

Men from around the world wearing Neck Scarves during Fashion Week as snapped by Tommy Ton (one of my favorite street photographers)

I have tried wearing round hat, I’ve tried monochrome trend, I’ve tried different kind of pants from jogger to chinos to rolled up pants, I’ve tried wearing different kind of shoes from sneakers to loafers, I’ve tried pulling off men’s clutch and menbun trend, but I’ve never tried this one before.

So, I decided to give it a try. I asked some friends where to get this neck scarf thing, most of them recommended Kana Goods to me. Kana is a local handmade natural dyed goods available in The Goods Dept, Pacific Place and at STOW Store, Jl Panglima Polim IX No 16.

My essentials: Lennon’s shades. Aark Collective watch. Kana’s Indigo Scarf.

Now, back to the title above.

I didn’t really have the guts to actually pull off this whole neck scarf look at first. Although, I’m pretty sure if my favorite fashion icon, James Dean’s still alive he’d encourage me to just go with it.

WWJDD. What would James Dean do, I thought to myself.

I decided to dig some historical information about this and I was really surprised with what I got. According to:¬†http://www.realmenrealstyle.com/mens-scarves-history/, scarf (or variations such as the necktie and cravat) have been in our wardrobes for over two millennia. It’s a manly 2,200 years old tradition.

Another reason why James Dean would support this look, and the more reason why I should do it, because over 80 generations of men have done it with gusto.

Besides, life’s short, be a hipster. Or whatever you want to be.

Wearing the legacy with confidence.

So last Sunday, as DR & I went out exploring some areas in Jakarta for our ootd photo, I tried the look.

Enough with the rockabilly look. When we moved on to the next spot, we decided to go street style and changed our outfit. This time it’s all¬†about sweaters, kicks, snapback and beanie.

We had fun strolling around finding more and more good spots for taking photos

(Not So) Average Wednesday

So today was started out as just another day. I planned to go home right away after office. I didn’t plan to meet DR and our other friends, spend the night with them – killing time while waiting for Jakarta’s traffic to finally end – and I didn’t even plan to get any ootd photo stock.

I woke up to Jakarta’s gloomy sky. So I just decided to go with a navy sweater, and of course my new neck scarf to add some statement. As for the bottoms part, I just went with my regular skinny jeans – all rolled up, and a pair of my black BNV.

What started out as (what I thought was) a regular weekday turned out to be quite a weekend-comes-too-soon experience. I guess my friends and I just couldn’t really move on from our holidays.

Me, DR and the rest of the troops met up after office. Had a spontaneous ootd session, thank God I always left home all fashionably prepared, and then had a pleasant dinner at Bariuma Ramen, Citywalk. It was my first time at Bariuma and surely won’t be my last. I might come back some time to share it with you what’s good and what’s not about it. Emphasize on “might”, though, haha.

Cruisin Down the Street With My… Penny Board

All I wanted for Christmas for my birthday was a penny board. I looked on every online shops, shopping websites, skate shops in Jakarta even Bali, yet I couldn’t found any. I literally looked for months until a few days after the new years, my brother managed to get one all the way from Singapore for me. Like a little kid, I was thrilled!

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Say hello to my Penny board!

I was a noob rider back in High School, starting to ride again was nerve-wrecking at first. Finally the day came when I had the opportunity to cruise with my penny board for the first time. Like a little kid in love, I was quite nervous.

That day I was accompanied by HG and another friend who wanted to try out the board as well. The day was gloomy and cold, luckily I was outfit ready for the weather. The maroon sweater from H&M kept me warm just fine. To keep it street, a snap-back  and a pair of Nike could never do you wrong. I chose a pair of Nike Internationalist and a Topman snap-back to keep me company.

I have always been the guy who keep things simple, the same goes with my outfit of the day which is pretty much black in color. Other than being simple, being comfortable is a must, especially on penny riding day!

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Simple and comfy.

Cruising down the hall.

If you like things simple, like me, accessorizing is a must! There is only a thin line between being simple and boring. That was why I brought a John Lennon style sun glasses to spice things up. Since I like it simple, a black frame is most suitable for me. If you thought of adding colors to your frame, in the name of standing out, think twice. I don’t think anyone doesn’t stand out enough with this kind of sunglasses.

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Trying to look like the legend.

Unlike me, HG refuses to be conventional. He likes things monochrome with a little shocking element. That was why he wore a pair of white BNV shoes, ripped black jeans, a white sweater and a neon beanie hat. It was clearly an outfit, sadly, I could never pull off! His sweater was one of his favorites from H&M with details as seen in the photo below. Funnily, both of us were wearing our John Lennon style sunglasses on that particular day!

Everything in monochrome.

Overall, it was a good day! I had good friends accompanying me, more over, I was satisfied to know I was still able to ride and cruise on my penny board after such a long time. Truth be told, I kind of twisted my ankle on one of these rides, but you know what they say… no pain, no gain!

To summarize it all, like a little kid excited for first day of school, I was excited for more penny riding days!

Looking forward for more penny riding days.

Last Coffee O’Clock in 2015.

As I typed this 2015 has¬†officially ended. It’s amazing how time blinks, isn’t it? Anyhow, I’m not here to write¬†about the oh-so-boring¬†new year new me stuff, I’m here to share my new favourite coffee shop in town.

Tanamera is definitely not a new player¬†in the local coffee industry. I’ve been coming back to their outlet in Thamrin Residence for a few times. I love the coffee, the foods, and the place, yet sometimes it can be quite crowded and noisy because it’s not really big.

I never complained about it though, but I’d surely love it if they would just open a bigger outlet. And apparently, they did! The newly opened outlet is located in Ahmad Dahlan, just right beside Letter D.

The new outlet offers a semi-outdoor experience, with minimalist and very comfortable interior plus a very spacey exterior. If the weather is nice, you would love to sit at the outdoor area, sipping your coffee while reading a book or working with your laptop.
