Bringing 90s Vibe To The Digital Era.

How was your New Year Eve celebration? Partying hard? Or, were you just like me, binge watching until I finally fell asleep. Whatever it is, just make sure that all the “New Year New Me” stuff is not just a one time euphoria. Make time to be grateful about everything (highs or lows) that God has allowed to happen to you in the past year, and write down every single thing that you want to see happen in the new year.

What’s more important is to actually keeping your hope alive, because you know sooner or later reality is gonna happen to you. Sometimes your plans will be delayed, postponed, or even canceled, but never stop believing that the journey of life is actually a constant road to better places.

Geesh what a long opening. I’m sorry. First post of 2018 will be about my current obsession over everything 90s. So I’m gonna compile some of my recent #OOTD photos and give you some useful tips plus what are the brands that I’ve been wearing (mostly locals). Gotta say thank you for my amazing photographers friends, Didi and Joel, who have been willing to help me in taking these ootd shots.

  1. Invest in accessory. By the way, prime colors is trending this year. Thus, the orange cap and yellow jacket.
  2. Oversized and tucked-in t-shirt is back. Balance your tee collection between the plain one and the printed one.
  3. Find something that can be your signature style. As for me, socks, apart from rounded-glasses, have been quite of my signature. I have plenty of them from any colors and patterns.
  4. Invest in basic outerwear like denim jacket and hooded pullover. Mine has a pair exaggerated sleeves that is really a head-turner. Oh, don’t forget to also invest in other basic stuff like a pair of black skinny jeans and white canvas shoes.
  5. Track pants are back. Enuff said.

Weekend Is Best For: Trying Out New Hang Out Places!

Well, the title is not entirely true, but it’s not entirely false either. I don’t know what about you, but for me weekend is always best for:

  1. Binge-watching while munching on my favorite snacks.
  2. Staying all day in my comfy room accompanied with books and a box of pizza.
  3. Hanging out with my favorite people while at the same time trying out new places.

I’m now a bit reluctant to go out on weekend, particularly on Saturday since the traffic is normally CRAZIER compared to weekdays. So, number 1 & 2 are definitely for Saturday, while number 3 is always a routine on Sunday. My friends and I (always)¬†started out with having zero clue about where we are going to hangout, and (always) ended up on a random newly-opened coffee shop or restaurant in Jakarta.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

This post will feature some of the new places that I got to try in the past month. I was originally planning to make a single post out of every coffee shop or restaurant that I visited, but on second thought I think it would be better to just compile them in one post.

Let’s start with the first one, which is my favorite Go-Food (food online delivery service in Jakarta) meals: HONU Poke & Matcha Bar. I know this is not new anymore, but I legit love this place and the menu! So here it is.

Located in Kemang, Honu serves a very yummy poke bowl consists of fresh and healthy ingredients like tuna, salmon, tofu, edamame, etc. I normally ordered the Super Bowl (Salmon, Avocado Crispy Kale, Edamame, Wakamame Carrots and Cucumber), or the Two & Two (Tuna, Salmon, Lettuce, Carrots, Tempura Crunch) with extra Salmon (yes, that’s how much I love salmon). Normally it would cost me about 75k – 100k per visit. The place is quite small, but still feel quite spacey and comfy with a smoking area on the back. I just really love the pastel colors they used as part of the interior with all those kinfolk-ish green plants.

Second one is DomaDona Coffee. I was there one Sunday to interview Greys Polii. The only reason we picked this place was because it was quite new, and we wanted to check out the hype. Surprisingly, unlike many other new coffee shops in town, which mostly are crowded in the first few weeks of their opening, DomaDona was a bit.. empty.

First thing that really turned me off was that they used a yellow-ish lamp instead of having big window panes for natural light to penetrate easily into their tiny space. It was a bit challenging to take photos with such lighting. Second of all, everything that we ordered taste rather plain. The highlight though, if you are looking for a nice place to sit and talk for hours, this is quite a good place.

Third one is the new branch of 1/15 Coffee located in Menteng. Their first outlet in Gandaria was definitely a nice place for hanging out with your friends or having a meeting. However, I always felt like it’s a bit too far from where I live. Voila, they seemed to hear my wish. The Menteng outlet is definitely nearer for me! Unlike the Gandaria one which offers very spacey room with high ceilings, the Menteng one feels more packed. Located next to Kaum Jakarta, 1/15 Menteng still serve you with the best of their coffee game and also foods, although honestly the foods and desserts in Gandaria taste way better.

Last but not least is Paradigma Coffee. I think is the most worth-visiting new coffee shop in town, simply because it offers.. *drumroll* a wide outdoorsy area with bean bags and green grass (synthetic though). Other than the coffee shop, this whole location also offers a co-working space, public library, local artisans shop, and also bakery. So it’s like a one stop place for any urban people to have fun, whether with friends or family. Having an outdoor public room in this overpopulated city is indeed a luxury, so to have one coffee shop which offers you a comfy place to sit outside is really a blessing.

Sunday Squad

Besides these fours, I have also stumbled upon the new Starbucks Reserve at Pakubuwono, Pizza Place at Como Park Kemang, and also Crumble Crew (you must try the Iscaketory!) at SCBD area. If you happen to have any new coffee shop, desserts place, or restaurants opening feel free to let me know so I can drop by and give it a try!

The Canali Experience: Store Launch and Su Misura

With so many weddings to attend at the end of the year, I have been contemplating much on the kinds of formal wear that gentlemen are wearing. As every night I show up for wedding, be it gigs or invitations, I always hate the challenge to suit differently or to show up with something I haven’t wore last week. I don’t deal with fashion pressure easily as I don’t really care that much. How many of you actually ended up wearing the same thing over and over again to weddings and formal parties just as I did?

It was a good thing that Canali invited me to host their store launch event right in the midst of my formal wear confusion. I got to learn so many things, met a lot of people and enjoy Canali’s prime store that exhibits formal wear, sport casual and accessories.

Su Misura: Made to Measure Service.

Now, let me explain to you what Su Misura means. Su Misura (french for made to measure) is a service that allows you to own a Canali suit made exclusively for you. Not just suits, but also blazers, pants, coats, dress shirts and even knitwear! This service is so exclusive that you can choose over 500 options of fabric that are renewed each season and many of which are made exclusively for Canali.

Enjoy creating as you are given the freedom to pick your own detail as you select lapels, buttons, pockets, linings, collars and cuffs among other options. Once the suit is finished, you can wear it with pride as your name will be embroidered on the label itself.

The Su Misura corner.

The event lasted only for a while, but being able to witness such a commitment to bring only the best details in their product and interior was quite a profound moment to me. I guess the commitment is what makes Canali one of the best in the industry since 1934.

Truth be told, I am very much humbled by the invitation to experience Canali.

Sumibi Restaurant: A Delightful Japanese Luncheon Experience.

Have I told you that 2017 has been one of the best year so far simply because it has plenty of public holidays? Yeap. After exploring Dieng and Belitung during the last two public holidays in April and May, I decided to spend this one (in June) to have a quality time with my two best friends.

Now, to complete this particular day off, my friends and I decided to have our all-time comfort foods (read: sushi and other Japanese cuisines) for lunch. Normally, Sushi Tei or Genki Sushi would be enough for us. But, since it was a holiday, we decided to try something new. And so we picked Sumibi Restaurant!

Located at the Ground Floor of One Park Residence, Gandaria, this Japanese restaurant offers wide range of authentic Japanese foods and other fusion dishes as well. Many people who have visited Sumibi testified that they always visit this restaurant when they miss visiting Japan. The foods taste pretty similar to the ones you can find in Japan, probably because the owner and executive chef (Yusuke Tsuchiya) is a Japanese.

The Perks of Being Twenty The Perks of Being 20 Henry Gerson Gerson Henry Lifestyle Foodies Jakarta Indonesia Japan Foods Sumibi Gandaria OnePark Residence 03

I had a hard time deciding what to order. Every single page of the menu looks so seducing. After flipping the menu pages back and forth we ordered Yaki Tomorokoshi Ama Sho-Yu Parmezan Cheese (grilled sweet corn, soy sauce, parmezan cheese) and Takoyaki Croquette for appetizer. While for the main course we ordered Crispy Salmon Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, California Roll and Chicken Nanban. Out of those, the highlight was the grilled sweet corn, takoyaki, and crispy salmon roll, and chicken nanban!

Honestly, we would order and try more food. But, since there were only the three of us, it would not be wise to order more foods as it would be wasted. Once we finished them all, we even had no more room for desserts. Sigh. I would definitely come back to try the other dishes.

I didn’t get to roam around the restaurant to capture its ambience, mostly because I was so bloated to move. Besides, I prefer to play with one of my favorite nephews, Joel and took some good photos with him. If you’re a real Japanese foods aficionado, this weekend you must put Sumibi in your go-to list! Who knows we might bump into each other, right?

A Day Well Spent at the Off The Wall Urban Art Exhibition

After a full week of hosting the SEAZA Conference, I was feeling very refreshed. Apparently, a week of staying in a nice hotel was more than a nice getaway for me. As I was enjoying Bogor, I was very much enthusiastic for my trip to Timika, Papua. I can say that November is definitely an exciting month!

As exciting as they are, I have responsibilities to maintain my creativity. As someone who gets money from his hustles in the creative industry, I am responsible to keep myself inspired at all times. Trust me, once you see travel as work, even traveling to an exotic beach can also be a burden.

That’s why, in between my travels, I try as much as possible to keep¬†myself creatively¬†fed in a concrete jungle like Jakarta. I think that’s the only way¬†that works for me to survive Jakarta. Since traffic is bad and work is so repetitive, ¬†the progressive¬†me have to switch work schedules once in a while to stop myself from being uninspired. That’s why I love art exhibitions and decided to visit Off the Wall urban art exhibition at¬†D’ Gallerie.

Hello there!

the-perks-of-being-twenty-lifestyle-art-exhibition-off-the-wall-graffiti-jakarta-01

Off the Wall Jakarta is an urban contemporary art exhibition that showcases work of 10 street artists from France and Indonesia.  Not only exhibition, they were also invited to collaborate and create street arts in the walls of Jakarta, including museums, galleries, schools and even hotels!

HG and I chose to visit D’ Gallerie, one of the exhibition locations that is very close to my place. The exhibition goes on from the 3rd of November till the 4th of December. You¬†still have lots of time to visit D’ Gallerie until the exhibition ends. Here are some of the artworks that you can enjoy with some photo spots for you to consider for your IG feed.

Guilty Pleasures

You can find some of my favourite artworks from Off the Wall in this post, but my favourite is called “Guilty Pleasures”. Scroll up again,¬†you will definitely know what the artist is trying to portray.

The gallery was very much an instagrammable spot.¬†Since it was quite empty at night, we took time to explore every¬†corner. I was wearing an off-white cardigan, over a black t-shirt accompanied by¬†dark blue jeans and my all time favourite brown red wing boots. It was definitely a right choice of outfit for an art exhibition. The cardigan and the boots gave a formal casual look.¬†The right choice of outer and shoes can really¬†boost a¬†serious look. Take HG’s outfit for another example. He was wearing a navy blazer over a plain grey t-shirt for a formal casual look. HG was also constantly showing¬†his playful-patterned socks, which has been his signature look for the past few months.¬†The cap helped toning down the blazer, giving him a casual but orderly look.

All in all, visiting Off the Wall was a great after office activity. Not forgetting to mention that D’Gallerie provides a cozy and relatively cheap cafe inside the building.¬†Coffee costs less than 30k and the place is very much spacious.

So there you have it! A weekend activity that includes artwork delights, photo opps and a nice cup of coffee. Off the Wall is definitely a must visit!

Something About the President’s Bomber Jacket!

Isn’t it funny how sometimes we, Indonesians, could make things viral through memes and social media?

Last weekend,¬†Jakarta was at the edge of having another riot, which successfully made most of us feeling unsafe and worried. Most¬†businesses¬†decided to close their offices and let their employees home for safety reasons. Well, I wasn’t complaining as I finally had the much-needed rest I’ve been longing for since last month.

So I spent my day off celebrating this real TGIF moment by sleeping in, having TV series marathon, editing photos for this particular post, and going to Gelora Bung Karno for my weekly 5K run. Hashtag humble brag. Each of my timeline in several social media platforms were filled with updated news about this massive protest. Some people shared their thoughts, some people shared photos, and MOST people shared funny memes. I decided not to throw any comments, whether the serious ones or the funny ones, at all. At that moment, I honestly thought that a prayer was what this country needed the most. Although, I had to admit scrolling through all the memes were very much entertaining.

the-perks-of-being-twenty-lifestyle-fashion-ootd-jakarta-08

Anyways, as the clock was about to hit 5.30 PM, I ordered Uber Motor to take me to Gelora Bung Karno, assuming that the demonstration had already finished and it was finally save to go out. Well, my assumption was kinda right, because the streets were pretty much empty. It was a very rare view on a Friday afternoon indeed!

Fast forward to 7 PM when I was finally back home and had shower. After a refreshing cold shower, I turned the TV on only to find out what started as a peaceful protest¬†had just turned into a riot¬†as late as bedtime story! I couldn’t be more grateful that I was already home because it looked very chaotic out there.

So I turned my tv off and decided to simply start working on this post. But, writer’s block happened.

The riot continued until almost midnight. Everyone was worried. I kept on getting text messages from friends overseas asking about my condition as I live quite near to the riot area. Finally, about 12.05 AM (I know right), our president appeared on TV for a press conference, giving his speech regarding the current situation. I didn’t really pay attention to that as I was so distracted by the outerwear that he wore on TV.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one noticing, because the moment I opened my Path, most friends were already posting funny memes about it. People were making a lot of fuss over – not the speech, interestingly – our president’s bomber jacket! I kind of took pride to the fact that this president that I voted appeared casually fashionable in public.

the-perks-of-being-twenty-lifestyle-fashion-ootd-jakarta-01

Thanks to you Mr. Jokowi, I finally have a topic to write!

Last week DR & I bought the so-called must have item of the season. Yeap, and we were accidentally – as always – twinning in our new bombers, baseball caps and Nike kicks, as we attended the soft opening of Onokabe Suki & Grill. What’s even better, we stumbled upon this empty balcony at the 2nd floor of the newly opened restaurant that was perfect for a photo opp.

DR got his black bomber jacket from Pull & Bear, which he wore with a black t-shirt, denim shorts, a pair of Nike Internationalist, and completed with a burgundy-colored cap. As DR decided to go black with bomber, I chose to stay loyal to this navy blue bomber  from Bershka. I wore it with a plain black t-shirt from Uniqlo, a pair of skinny from H&M, a pair of Nike Airmax, and I completed the look with a pale pink (say what, aesthetic generation, haha) cap.

We loved the look as much as RI 1 did. Mr Jokowi, any chance for a OOTD collaboration with us?

This look would be suitable for you if you love to appear casual and simple. Sometimes I’d go with a plain white t-shirt underneath the jacket. But that would be another topic. Yeap, we have¬†another article about plain white tee that we’ll share with you in a few weeks!

A Little Flashback to Cirebon!

How is October treating you so far? As for us, although this month started with not much of hustle and intensity, we kind of felt that it¬†won’t last for long.

Our prediction was right. Just a week later, we already found ourselves back in the fast lane, playing hide and seek with deadlines. Welcome back, oh lack of sleep.

The temptation to impulsively book a ticket for a short getaway out of this hustle was real.¬†But as much as I’d love to have one, I think my hands are tied at least until the end of October.

Anyway, just when I was in the middle of sorting out things, setting up timelines, preparing slides and everything, an e-mail came to my inbox. It’s a vlog from our Cirebon Trip back in May, shot and edited by our talented friend, Tonny Sutiono (@sevencrow).

If you’ve been facing the same situation like we do, hang in there. You are not alone. Let’s endure the productive season and use our twenties to really make plenty of inspiring stories that we can share to our grandchildren in the future!
