Isn’t it ironic that we try to “escape” Jakarta as if it was a prison, yet outsiders are coming in every year looking for bigger opportunities as if it was Hollywood?
It doesn’t matter how you see it, Hollywood or prison, I have an unhealthy love and hate relationship with Jakarta. I love the opportunities it offers and the lifestyle it upholds, but I hate its unbearable traffic and stress level. Think about it, if it’s so bearable, why would Bandung and all the other cities nearby be swamped with cars from Jakarta on every long weekend?
Undeniably, escaping Jakarta was our main objective last weekend. After 8 hours of driving, we finally got to Cirebon, the land of good food and heritages. More stories about Cirebon later, but for now, this is our postcard to you.
Cirebon is definitely one of the most popular cities that is well-known for its local Batik craftsmanship. We drove deep inside to the heart of Kampung Trusmi to learn more about batik through its origins and style.
Batik isn’t only a way to make money. For the locals, it is definitely a way of life. This idealism is accompanied by a chase of perfection and therefore produces some of the most premium batik by the most skilled artists.
We visited a lot of places. One of the most memorable for me was Ade Irma beach. It is definitely one of the worst beaches that I’ve ever visited. The sea was brown and the so called “beach” was overcrowded. But, since I was missing the beach so much, I decided to enjoy what I had. Well, I enjoyed it a little bit to much I fell asleep at the dock.
I am keeping the best photos for the last, the highlight of this journey and the treasure of this expedition: food.
People were telling me about the culinary experience I would have in Cirebon, but as you might know, I’m not a big fan of food. Give me anything and I’ll eat it. However, I was caught off guard everytime I tasted Cirebon’s good food.
These foods were heaven sent and these street vendors were angels in disguise. These cooks has contributed more to the world than Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking and they would make better president than Trump. I might over exaggerate the fact with that two scientists, but not with that presidential candidate.
We will write more about Cirebon in the upcoming weeks. Keep yourself updated by following our Instagram @theperksofbeing20!
